Unfortunately acne is not easy to treat, due to the involvement of both bacteria and hormones, but as mentioned before, a combination of treatments is needed to get optimum results.
What is Acne?
When sebum from the skin’s sebaceous glands plug the openings of the hair follicles this can result in blackheads or whiteheads. If the plug causes the wall of the follicle to split, the oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria normally found on the surface of the skin can penetrate the skin, causing eruptions on the skin surface known as spots or pimples. In severe cases, painful cysts can form under the skin which become inflamed or infected. Over time, acne can leave unsightly scars which can be difficult to eradicate.
Treatments for Acne
At Medix Skincare & Laser Clinic in Melbourne we use the latest UltraPlus VPL laser treatment for active acne which destroys the P-Acne bacteria that causes acne. VPL Laser has been clinically proven to reduce acne and improve the appearance of acne scars. It combines anti-inflammatory action with antibacterial effects, using variable pulsed light to provide safe and effective acne treatments. A course of 4-6 VPL laser treatments for acne significantly reduces acne and also improves skin texture, while initiating collagen production.
Chemical Peels remove dead skin
cells and clean out clogged pores, reducing inflammation in the deeper layers of the skin and shrinking the breakout and amount of oil in the pores. Many different types of peels can be used to alleviate acne as well as scarring, at Medix Skincare & Laser Clinic, Melbourne we use a combination of lactic and salicylic peels depending on the grade of the acne. The acne treatment can be performed in less than 30 minutes, and your skin may be red and flaky for a few days following the chemical peel.
Microdermabrasion removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells that form the epidermis which is very useful for people with mild acne discolouration, pick marks, and very superficial or raised acne scars. Microdermabrasion will give you smoother skin texture and can minimise the appearance of enlarged pores and dark spots from previous breakouts. While you may notice improvement after one procedure, treatments work best when performed every two weeks in a series of 6 to 8 sessions.
Radiofrequency Micro-needlingRadiofrequency Micro-needling is a new technology that can remove acne lesions, smooth away scars and balance pigmentation and generally improve the appearance and vitality of your skin. Instead of applying heat to the skin surface, like in laser treatment, RF energy penetrates deeply into the dermis, using tiny insulated gold needles to carry the energy directly into the lower skin layers, producing a bulk heating effect on the dermis without heating the epidermis. The heat seems to destroy the P-Acne bacteria and inhibit the sebaceous glands activity and thus reduces sebum production resulting in an improvement in inflammatory acne lesions. The RF energy stimulates growth factors secretion and natural collagen, and elastin production which results in restructuring the skin layers without releasing any potentially damaging heat into the epidermis.
The insertions of tiny needles, also stimulate a wound healing response that increases fibroblast production, which works with the collagen and elastin to result in reducing the appearance of acne scars, surgery scars, and stretch marks.
It’s important to know that the above acne and acne scarring treatments alone will not keep your skin clear. You’ll also need to treat your skin daily at home with the proper skin care system to keep new plugs from forming in your pores. Once your skin is looking clearer, you may want to get maintenance treatments (every 1 – 2 months) in addition to your customised daily skin care regimen to keep your acne under control.

Redness of the skin is to be expected. Immediately following your treatment you may feel a little sunburnt and the treated area may be red for a few hours. Clients with darker skin may notice the skin is darker after the treatment. This will gradually lighten over a period of about two weeks. Male beards are likely to lose hair at the same time as the acne is treated. Some clients may experience swelling, but this goes away within a few days.
A cool compress immediately after treatment will relieve any swelling or burnt feeling.
Applying a cooling gel such as Aloe Vera and Tea Tree can help but don’t use anti-inflammatory products which could interfere with the treatment.
